Healthcare in Flagstaff: Hospitals, Urgent Care, and What to Know Before You Move

Flagstaff Medical Center, urgent care, community clinics, and VA options, sourced and current: what moving families should know about healthcare in Flagstaff.

If you are moving to Flagstaff, the healthcare question usually comes down to one thing: can a town of this size really cover us? Yes, in most of the ways that matter. Flagstaff has the only state-designated Level I trauma center north of Phoenix, a full-service regional hospital, urgent care on both sides of town, a community health network that bills on a sliding scale, and an accredited birth center. This guide covers what is actually here, what is honestly not, and what is changing, with sources you can check yourself.

Does Flagstaff have a good hospital?

Yes. Flagstaff Medical Center (FMC) at 1200 N. Beaver Street is the largest hospital in northern Arizona and the flagship of Northern Arizona Healthcare (NAH), an integrated network that serves more than 700,000 people across the region. It is a 267-bed tertiary-care hospital with a 24/7 emergency department, a surgical intensive care unit, and around-the-clock cardiac catheterization, neurosurgery, and orthopedic surgery coverage. Rural hospitals, tribal communities, and smaller facilities across Coconino County transfer their sickest patients to FMC, which makes it the regional referral center for all of northern Arizona.

What does the Level I trauma designation mean?

In April 2026 the Arizona Department of Health Services re-designated Flagstaff Medical Center as a Level I trauma center for another three years, making it the only state-designated Level I trauma center north of Phoenix. It is also a state-designated cardiac receiving center. One honest nuance worth knowing: the American College of Surgeons withdrew its separate Level II verification in August 2024, and Northern Arizona Healthcare said the state Level I designation was unaffected, which the state then re-approved in 2026. If you read about this online, that is the story behind the headline.

Is a new Flagstaff hospital on the way?

This is the biggest healthcare story in town and it is genuinely unresolved. Northern Arizona Healthcare spent years planning a replacement campus projected at $750 million to $800 million, a health and wellness village with a new hospital and ambulatory care center, but Flagstaff voters rejected the project in November 2023. In February 2026 NAH paused site selection and construction plans, citing rising costs and federal Medicaid cuts, and said it would not commit to a site or timeline. By May 2026 reporting suggested plans were moving again, with a two-structure campus, an ambulatory care center plus a hospital, discussed for the next four years and a possible city council decision in fall 2026. The honest current read: the downtown FMC is Flagstaff's hospital today, and the shape and timing of the new campus remain open questions. Check the local news before you plan around a location.

Urgent care and after-hours care

For anything that is not an emergency, Flagstaff has real urgent care options. Northern Arizona Healthcare runs Urgent Care at Woodlands Village (2700 S. Woodlands Village Blvd, 928-440-5406), open for appointments and walk-ins with weekday and weekend hours. NextCare operates two seven-day urgent care locations, at 1000 N. Humphreys Street (928-779-3844) and 399 S. Malpais Lane. North Country HealthCare also runs an urgent care phone line for its patients when you want a quick check on symptoms before you drive anywhere. After hours, the FMC emergency department is always open, and 911 remains the answer for true emergencies.

Community health clinics for every budget

North Country HealthCare is a nonprofit community health center, a federally qualified health center that has served northern Arizona since the 1990s and bills on a sliding scale, so care is available whether or not you have insurance. It has two Flagstaff clinics: the larger one at 2920 N. 4th Street (928-522-9400), open six days a week, and a second at 1120 W. University Avenue (928-522-1300). Services include primary and family medicine, pediatrics, dental, pharmacy, physical therapy, virtual visits, and integrated behavioral health. For many moving families this is the fastest way to establish care while you wait for a primary care physician to take new patients.

Mental health and behavioral health

Mental health care is part of the local picture, not an afterthought. North Country HealthCare embeds behavioral health consultants in its primary care clinics, so a counseling referral can start with your regular appointment. The Guidance Center of Northern Arizona is the regional community mental health center, serving all ages with counseling, crisis services, and substance use treatment from its Flagstaff base on E. Industrial Drive. Denova Collaborative Health in Forest Meadows combines primary care, behavioral health, and psychiatry under one roof for families. If you are in crisis, the national 988 line is available from Flagstaff like anywhere else.

Emergency transport and air medical care

Northern Arizona is huge and rural, so the region leans on air medical transport in a way most cities do not. Guardian Air is a hospital-based, nonprofit air ambulance program tied to Flagstaff Medical Center, based at Flagstaff Pulliam Airport, flying helicopters and a fixed-wing aircraft to remote areas of northern Arizona. It exists because a two-hour ground ambulance run is not acceptable for a heart attack or a serious accident. In Flagstaff itself, the FMC emergency department and the 911 system cover day-to-day emergencies.

Specialty care: veterans, students, and families

Three groups get extra attention. Veterans are covered by the Flagstaff VA Clinic at 1300 W. University Avenue (928-226-1056), an outpatient clinic offering primary care, mental health care, women's health, lab work, and pharmacy through the Northern Arizona VA Health Care System. NAU students use Campus Health Services at the Health and Learning Center (824 S. San Francisco Street) for medical care, counseling, and psychiatry, with after-hours provider coverage by phone. For families planning a birth, Flagstaff Birth & Women's Center at 401 W. Aspen Avenue (928-556-0000) is northern Arizona's first accredited freestanding birth center, and home-birth midwifery practices operate in and around town.

When do you need to leave Flagstaff for care?

For everyday care, urgent needs, emergencies, childbirth, and most specialties, the care is local. What Flagstaff does not have is the superspecialty depth of a Phoenix or Tucson medical community: complex oncology trials, some transplants, and highly specialized pediatric or surgical programs are the cases that most often mean a trip to the Valley, roughly two hours south by interstate. That is normal geography for a mountain town of this size, and it is worth factoring into any move, especially if someone in your household manages a serious chronic condition.

What the healthcare picture means for your move

Healthcare is one of the strongest reasons people feel comfortable moving to Flagstaff: real regional coverage without big-city sprawl. It is also a reason to buy smart. Families with young kids often start their neighborhood search on the east side near the hospital; commuters like quick access to I-40. The neighborhood guides cover which areas sit closest to care, and the Moving to Flagstaff guide has the full relocation picture, from schools to utilities.
