Flagstaff Utilities and Internet: What to Set Up Before You Move

Who provides power, water, gas, and internet in Flagstaff, how to start service before you move, and what changes outside city limits. The sourced setup guide.

A Flagstaff neighborhood street at blue hour in October, warm lights glowing in home windows beneath ponderosa pines and the San Francisco Peaks

Flagstaff's utility setup is refreshingly simple once you know who does what: Arizona Public Service (APS) handles electricity, UniSource Energy Services handles natural gas, and the City of Flagstaff handles water, sewer, and trash inside town limits. Internet is where you actually get a choice, with cable, fiber, local providers, and 5G all serving the city. Here is the current, sourced rundown of what to set up before you move, updated for late 2026.

The quick version: who provides what

  • Electricity: Arizona Public Service (APS). Start service at aps.com, and APS recommends doing it at least three business days before move-in.
  • Natural gas: UniSource Energy Services. If the home heats with gas, the account runs through uesaz.com.
  • Water, sewer, and trash: the City of Flagstaff, all billed together on one municipal services account.
  • Internet: Optimum cable reaches the most addresses, with fiber, local providers, and 5G home internet depending on your exact street.
  • Outside city limits: water and sewer commonly come from a community provider or a private well, so the setup belongs to the property, not the city.

Electricity: Arizona Public Service (APS)

APS is the electric utility for the Flagstaff area. Residential service can be started online at aps.com or by phone at (800) 253-9405, and APS recommends scheduling your start at least three business days ahead. That timing is the practical part most movers underestimate: give it a few business days, not move-in morning.

Natural gas: UniSource Energy Services

If the property has natural gas service, which many Flagstaff homes use for heat and hot water, the gas account runs through UniSource Energy Services, formerly UniSource Utilities, at uesaz.com or (877) 837-4968. Heating is the biggest seasonal line item on a Flagstaff bill, and the fuel matters: when you tour homes, ask whether the heat is gas or electric, because it changes the winter budget either way.

Water, sewer, and trash: one City of Flagstaff account

Inside city limits, the City of Flagstaff provides water, wastewater, and curbside trash and recycling, all billed together on a single municipal services account. Start service through the city's online form, in person at City Hall at 211 W. Aspen Ave., or by phone at (928) 213-2231. The city asks for at least one business day's notice for service changes, and when you move, file both the start form for the new address and the stop form for the old one. Single-family homes get curbside pickup on a collection schedule with containers out by 6 a.m. on collection day, plus quarterly bulk-trash pickup.

Homes outside city limits change the picture

The surrounding communities run their own water systems, so a home in Doney Park, Kachina Village, or Mountainaire is a different setup from a home in town. Doney Park Water, Kachina Village Water, and Ponderosa Utility Corporation in Mountainaire are the community providers, and some rural properties sit on private wells and septic systems instead. Natural gas lines do not reach every mountain property either, so some rural homes heat with propane or electric. The practical rule: ask the listing agent exactly how each property gets water, sewer, and heat before you make an offer, because the answer changes both the monthly bill and the winter experience.

Internet: Flagstaff is better connected than most mountain towns

For a city at 7,000 feet, Flagstaff has genuinely good internet options, which matters for anyone working from home. The lineup, current for 2026:

  • Optimum: the cable provider with the broadest coverage, available to roughly 89 to 94 percent of Flagstaff homes with plans up to about 940 Mbps, and commonly rated the best overall option in town.
  • Quantum Fiber (CenturyLink): fiber service in many neighborhoods.
  • Bluespan: a locally owned northern Arizona ISP serving Flagstaff with fiber and fixed-wireless plans and no data caps, popular in the surrounding communities.
  • Allo and Wecom: local fiber providers expanding their Flagstaff footprints.
  • 5G home internet from T-Mobile, Verizon, and other carriers, plus Starlink and satellite options for the farthest mountain properties.

The catch is that coverage is address-specific. Two houses three blocks apart can have completely different options, so the first question Mike tells every buyer to ask is what internet the exact address supports. The remote-work post goes deeper on what that means for a home office.

Winter is when utilities become a budget item

Flagstaff's winters are real, and so is the January utility bill. Heating is the largest seasonal line item in most homes, and how much it costs depends mostly on the home itself: age, windows, insulation, and whether the heat is gas or electric. Look at those on the tour, not after closing. Snow matters too: keep exterior vents and heat-pump units clear, and know where the driveway sits on the plow route. The winters guide covers the full seasonal budget picture.

The move-day checklist

  • Start APS at least three business days before move-in and schedule the exact day.
  • File the city start form a business day or two ahead, and do not forget the stop form at your old address.
  • Book the internet install early; installers book out in busy seasons, and it is the utility you will notice fastest.
  • Ask the seller or landlord for the current average monthly bill on each service. Real numbers beat guesses.
  • Confirm the trash collection day and where the containers go; neighbors are happy to tell you.

The good news is none of this is complicated, it is just a short list of accounts. And if you are shopping for a home and want the honest read on what any property will cost to run, Mike will walk the address with you. That is what he is here for.
