Flagstaff is not a sleepy mountain town that has stopped changing. In the last year it has gained new restaurants, a plant-based eatery, a coming speakeasy and French bakery from a James Beard semifinalist, a downtown hotel project, and housing by the thousand. If you are moving or just paying attention, this is the current, sourced rundown of what is new and what is on its way.
New food and drink downtown
The restaurant scene is where the change is easiest to taste. Neighborhood favorite El Tapatio opened a second Flagstaff location in July 2025 in the Fort Valley Shopping Center just north of downtown, filling the former Bow Wow Street Dogs space. Plantasia Eatery, a plant-based vegan and vegetarian restaurant with a full bar, opened on January 18 at 126 W. Cottage Ave. south of the tracks downtown. And Urban Pine Eatery downtown has won a following for flatbread pizza, salads, and subs.
The biggest names on the way belong to James Beard semifinalist Chef Rochelle Daniel, who is opening two concepts at 101 N. Leroux St. downtown: Pompette, a French-inspired grab-and-go bistro and bakery, and Little Rich Girl, a speakeasy cocktail bar. They were expected to debut through the summer into mid-September 2026, so check current hours as you plan a visit.
New places to stay
- A new downtown hotel is moving again at 19 W. Birch Ave., the former City Hall site. The Capri Flagstaff project, reported as a proposed Hilton Graduate Hotel with an adjoining parking garage, cleared demolition approval through the city's Heritage Preservation Commission in July 2026. It is still in design and no opening date is set.
- NCG Hospitality announced Flagstaff's first dual-branded hotel, a Home2 Suites by Hilton plus Tru by Hilton with roughly 204 combined rooms.
- A low-density RV and hospitality project near historic Route 66 is under construction, with millions of tons of excavated red rock reused on site for campground pads, road loops, and landscaping.
Housing is coming by the thousands
Housing remains the defining Flagstaff story, and new supply is finally moving. Sierra on 66, a 224-unit affordable complex at Timber Sky built by Roers Cos., celebrated its grand opening in December 2025. The Elkwood mixed-use project at 4th St. and Butler Ave. is planned for 224 apartments plus roughly 6,000 square feet of retail. Capstone Homes has filed plans for about 100 homes across two connected neighborhoods, Timber Sky and Canyon del Rio, and large developments continue along John Wesley Powell Blvd.
Public projects and community
Beyond private development, city-funded work is touching everyday life. The 2026 funding round includes a $500,000 reconstruction of Ponderosa Park in Sunnyside with a new playground and post-flood repair, support for The Lantern hotel-to-housing shelter and the Northland Family Help Center, and a major public-art sculpture for the Spruce Wash Jubilee detention project at East Cedar Ave. and North West St.
What this means if you are moving
Here is the honest read. More housing, even by the thousands, is unlikely to drop Flagstaff prices overnight; demand still runs strong. But new supply, including affordable units, matters for your options and for the market's long-term trajectory. New restaurants and a downtown hotel signal that the town's amenities are growing, not shrinking.
